Mount Keira

The natural beauty of Mount Keira gives an unspoiled backdrop to the City of Wollongong and is home to just under 2,000 people. Mount Keira is a very family orientated, tightly held suburb, due to it’s close proximity to high performing schools and easy access to M1. It was once prime agricultural land, worked by convicts and celebrated for it’s fine produce. In 1857 the Kemira Colliery, the oldest producing coal mine, was opened with most of the mineworkers local born and part time farmers. A coal boom in the late 1880’s saw men brought in from European countries, and houses were built adjacent to the mine so that these people could be housed.
